Identify your core values and assess how well your current activities align with them — then plan changes to close the gap.
When we're struggling, we often drift away from the things that matter most. This worksheet helps you identify your values across life domains, rate how well you're currently living in line with each, and plan specific activities to close the gap. It's useful in depression, eating disorders, chronic pain, and schema work.
Use after the values assessment to map current activities against identified values, revealing gaps between how the client spends their time and what matters to them. This gap analysis provides a concrete foundation for behavioural activation planning that is intrinsically motivating rather than arbitrary.
Build on the values work: 'Now that we've identified what matters most to you, let's look at how your current activities line up with those values. This will help us see where there are gaps and plan activities that move you toward the life you want, not just keep you busy.'
For clients with very low activity levels, focus on one or two key values rather than attempting a comprehensive alignment. For those who feel overwhelmed by the gap between values and current behaviour, normalise this as the impact of depression rather than personal failure. Use visual mapping for clients who prefer non-linear formats.
Avoid if the client has not yet completed values identification work, as the exercise requires a clear sense of personal values. Be cautious if large value-action gaps might trigger hopelessness or self-criticism without adequate therapeutic scaffolding.
The alignment gaps are the most therapeutically useful output. Use them to prioritise which new activities to introduce in behavioural activation. Even small activities aligned with core values can have a disproportionate impact on mood compared to generic pleasant activities. Track alignment scores over the course of therapy as an outcome measure.
